Hidden Photo Spots in Kyoto

Discover Hidden Gems in Kyoto

Kyoto is famous for iconic locations such as Fushimi Inari Shrine, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and Gion Higashiyama district ! While these locations are beautiful, they are often crowded with visitors, especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. As local photographers and guides based in Kyoto, we often take our clients to lesser-known locations where they can enjoy a quieter and more authentic Kyoto experience. These hidden spots provide beautiful scenery, fewer crowds, and unique photo opportunities that many travelers never discover !

Why Hidden Locations Matter

Many visitors imagine Kyoto as a peaceful city filled with traditional streets, temples, and gardens. The reality is that some famous tourist attractions can become extremely crowded during peak travel seasons. Hidden locations offer

  • More privacy
  • Better photography opportunities
  • Authentic local atmosphere
  • Less waiting time
  • A more relaxed experience

For couples, families, and proposal sessions, quieter locations often create more natural and memorable photographs.

Hidden Traditional Streets

Some of Kyoto’s most beautiful streets are located away from the busiest tourist routes. These areas feature

  • Traditional wooden houses
  • Stone pathways
  • Historic architecture
  • Seasonal flowers
  • Peaceful local neighborhoods

Early mornings are often the best time to experience these locations !

Secret Temple Areas

Many travelers visit Kyoto’s most famous temples but overlook smaller temples and gardens nearby. These quieter locations often provide

  • Beautiful seasonal scenery
  • Traditional Japanese gardens
  • Historic buildings
  • Peaceful atmosphere
  • Excellent photography conditions

Some of our favorite locations are places that many visitors walk past without noticing !

Riverside Hidden Gems

Kyoto’s rivers and canals offer beautiful scenery throughout the year. Away from the most popular areas, visitors can find

  • Scenic walking paths
  • Cherry blossom trees
  • Autumn foliage
  • Traditional bridges
  • Local neighborhoods

These locations are especially popular for family photography and couple sessions !

Bamboo Forest Alternatives

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest is one of Kyoto’s most famous attractions. However, many travelers are surprised to learn that Kyoto has other bamboo areas that are often much quieter. These hidden locations can provide a more relaxed photography experience while preserving the beauty and atmosphere people love.

My girlfriend (now fiancée) and I recently traveled to Kyoto and booked a photoshoot with Coo, and the entire experience exceeded our expectations. I initially requested Philosopher’s Path because we wanted pictures with peak fall foliage, but after talking with Coo, he recommended Arashiyama Park instead. He explained that the colors would be way better there and he knew areas where we would have more privacy for photos. That advice alone made a big difference because the setting was incredible and felt like a hidden spot even during the busy fall season.

I also let him know that I was planning to propose during the shoot. He helped me work out the timing and location so it would feel natural and still capture the moment clearly. From the first message all the way through receiving our photos, he responded quickly, answered all my questions, and made everything easy. During the session, he walked us through poses and angles in a way that never felt forced. It helped us relax and enjoy the whole process. His friendly personality made a big difference. Looking back, choosing Coo was one of the best decisions of our trip. The photos turned out beautifully, and the experience added so much to our engagement story. I highly recommend him to anyone who wants an amazing photoshoot in Japan.

I cannot recommend Coo enough for anyone looking for a Kyoto photographer! What started as a simple couples shoot quickly turned into an engagement session when I proposed just days before. Coo was incredibly accommodating, making the experience effortless and fun. He has a natural talent for making you feel comfortable in front of the camera, guiding us with expert posing tips while still keeping everything candid and authentic.

What really sets Coo apart is his deep knowledge of the best photography spots in Kyoto, especially around the Gion District and Fushimi Inari Shrine. He took us to hidden gems only a true local photographer would know, places away from the crowds that offered stunning backdrops. On top of being a fantastic photographer, he was super friendly, informative, and made the entire shoot feel like we were exploring Kyoto with a friend who happens to be amazing with a camera. If you’re looking for a professional photographer in Kyoto for a couples shoot, engagement photos, or just to capture your time in Japan, Coo is the one to book. We couldn’t be happier with our experience!

Thank you Coo for the most magical experience getting our proposal pictures taken in Kyoto! Throughout the experience Coo was incredibly helpful in curating our 90 minute session to make sure it was exactly to our needs, he was flexible when we made a slight change to plans only 48 hours before the session and on the day was so unbelievably kind and great company for the 90 minutes we had. Coo took us to places we wouldn’t have originally looked at which proved to be hidden gems and away from most tourists, for this alone the experience was worth it. Both my partner and I are generally quite shy when it comes to photos but Coo made us feel at ease and guided us through the session to make sure we had plenty of settings and photo angles/positions to capture the moment. I’ll share photos post edit, but cannot recommend Coo and Yurika highly enough if you have a special moment to capture in Japan, or just want stunning photos to remember your trip by!

We found Coo via Instagram, and I wasn’t sure if he was legit. However, he replied promptly, and after some conversations on WhatsApp, we trusted him. We made the payment to secure the date we wanted. It was before New Year, so we were lucky that he was still available on the date we chose. We had the pleasure of having our picture taken by a talented photographer in mount Fuji-Japan, and the experience exceeded all expectations. This skilled artist not only captured beautiful moments but also added a personal touch to the entire photographic session. One of the standout qualities of Coo is his exceptional proficiency in English. As a non-Japanese speaker, communication was seamless, greatly enhancing the overall experience. Coo’s ability to understand and execute our preferences, coupled with his friendly demeanor, created a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

What truly sets Coo apart is his intimate knowledge of hidden gems and lesser-known spots in mount Fuji. While other local photographers might stick to popular spots, Coo took us to unique locations that even some locals were unaware of. This added an element of exclusivity to our photos, making them all the more special. Coo’s keen eye for detail and composition was evident in every shot, capturing the essence of mount Fuji in a way that felt both authentic and artistic. Each photograph told a story that went beyond the surface. His dedication to create memorable images was infectious and translated into a series of photographs that not only documented our time in Japan but also became cherished memories. If you’re looking for a photographer in Japan who not only possesses technical skill but also goes above and beyond to ensure a positive and personalized experience, look no further. Coo’s blend of talent, language proficiency, and local knowledge makes him a standout choice for anyone seeking to capture the beauty of Japan through a lens. I wholeheartedly recommend his services for a truly unforgettable photographic experience.

We recently had the most incredible photo session in Kyoto, Japan, and we can’t say enough wonderful things about our photographer, Coo. From the moment we met, he was warm, professional, and incredibly knowledgeable about the city. What made this experience truly unforgettable were the unique and carefully chosen locations he brought us to — hidden corners and picturesque spots that really captured the essence of Kyoto’s historic district. It felt like we were stepping back in time, walking through quiet alleyways, traditional wooden streets, and serene temples, all while he expertly guided us and captured every moment with such authenticity and artistry.

Not only was the setting exactly what we were looking for to capture our time in Japan, but the photos themselves came out absolutely wonderful—beautifully composed, thoughtfully edited, and full of emotion. He captured both the charm of the surroundings and the genuine joy we felt throughout the session. These are not just pictures; they are cherished memories we will treasure for years to come. We can’t recommend him enough. If you’re looking for a meaningful and unforgettable photo experience in Kyoto, Coo is the photographer to book!
