Kyoto Early Spring Proposal Photoshoot | A Romantic Engagement Session in Higashiyama and Yodo River

They wanted photographs that would capture not only their proposal and engagement, but also the beauty of Kyoto and the memories of their Japan trip. One of their wishes was to include cherry blossoms in their engagement photos. The challenge was the timing. Their photoshoot took place on March 9, which is still very early in Kyoto’s spring season. While many travelers associate March with cherry blossoms in Japan, the famous “Somei Yoshino” cherry trees that create Kyoto’s iconic spring scenery generally bloom later. Rather than taking the couple to a famous cherry blossom location where the trees would still be bare, we looked for a location where cherry blossoms were already blooming. That led us to Yodo River and its famous “Kawazu” cherry blossoms.
Why We Chose Yodo River for Early Cherry Blossoms
One of the most important things about planning a Kyoto photoshoot during the early spring season is understanding that not all cherry blossoms bloom at the same time. Kawazu cherry blossoms are known for blooming earlier than many of the cherry tree varieties commonly seen throughout Kyoto. Starting at 6:00 AM to Avoid the Crowds
Kyoto is one of Japan’s most popular destinations, and the famous streets of Higashiyama can become extremely busy during the day. Since this couple specifically wanted a quiet and romantic experience, we started the sunrise photoshoot in Higashiyama Kyoto at 6:00 AM. This early start gave us a much more peaceful atmosphere. We walked through the historic streets around:
- Yasaka Pagoda
- Ninen-zaka
- Higashiyama
Instead of photographing the couple against a crowded background, we were able to capture quiet moments as they walked together through Kyoto’s traditional streets. Early morning also provided beautiful soft light, which worked particularly well with the couple’s natural and romantic photography style.

Higashiyama is one of the best areas in Kyoto for couples who want photographs that immediately feel like Japan. The traditional streets, wooden buildings, stone pathways, and historic atmosphere create a timeless backdrop. We photographed the couple walking naturally through the area around Yasaka Pagoda and Ninen-zaka. Rather than asking them to pose constantly, I guided them through the streets and photographed their natural interactions. If you want quiet photographs in Kyoto, I highly recommend scheduling your session early in the morning. This is particularly important for popular areas such as Higashiyama. Starting early provides several advantages

Popular streets can become very crowded later in the morning. Starting at 6:00 AM gives us a much better chance of photographing traditional Kyoto streets without large groups of tourists.
2. Beautiful natural light
Early morning light is soft and flattering, making it particularly suitable for romantic couple photography.
3. A more intimate experience
A quiet street makes it much easier for couples to relax and enjoy the session.
4. More flexibility

Tips for Planning a Kyoto Early Spring Proposal Photoshoot
Check the actual cherry blossom conditions

Consider Kawazu cherry blossoms in early – mid March
If you are visiting Kyoto in late February or early March and want cherry blossoms, Yodo River’s Kawazu cherry blossoms can be an excellent option. They can bloom significantly earlier than the cherry trees that create Kyoto’s famous peak-season scenery.
Schedule your session early
For popular areas such as Higashiyama, a 6:00 AM start can make a huge difference. If an early morning start is not possible, I can also suggest quieter locations that are less crowded during the day.
Wear comfortable shoes
Higashiyama has many slopes, stone streets, and stairs. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. If you want to wear high heels for some of the photographs, I recommend bringing them separately and changing into them once we arrive at the location.
Choose simple colors
Unless you have a specific theme, I generally recommend avoiding busy patterns such as stripes or plaids. Soft, solid colors with one matching accent color tend to work beautifully against Kyoto’s traditional architecture and natural scenery.
Local Kyoto Knowledge Makes a Difference
As a Kyoto-based photographer, I don’t simply choose locations based on how famous they are. The best location depends on several factors:

- Time of day
